It is official that Matthew Stafford will be the #1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft.  Friday night he signed a 6 year $72 million contract with the Lions.  $41.7 of it is guarenteed.  This deal is the richest given to a draft choice in draft history.

2. St. Louis Rams – OT Jason Smith – Baylor

Steven Jackson has had a tough time staying healthy during the 2008 season.  With or without Jackson, St. Louis has struggled running the ball as well as protecting the QB.  At the end of the season the Rams finished 25th in the NFL in rushing yards per game and 27th in the league in sacks allowed. They desperately need an offensive lineman to battle in the trenches. Jason Smith looks to be just a little bit better than Eugene Monroe.  With the number two pick in the draft look for St. Louis to boost the line with Smith and expect the 2009 offensive production to increase.

3. Kansas City Chiefs – OLB Aaron Curry – Wake Forest

Kansas City finished the season 30th in the NFL in rushing yards given up per game which was about 160 yards.  They also need to look at a pass rusher seeing as though they were worst in defensive sacks.  They ended up with 10 sacks in 16 games in 2008.  Aaron Curry will fill both of those needs.  He can put pressure on the QB as well as fill the gaps and stop the opposing running game.  I like the Chiefs taking Curry with the 3rd pick in the 2009 NFL draft.

4. Seattle Seahawks - QB Mark Sanchez – USC

Seattle could go with Virginia’s OT Eugene Monroe but they have shown a lot of interest in Mark Sanchez.  This would be a great situation for Sanchez.  He wont be thrown into the fire and will be able to learn from a great QB Matt Hasselbeck.

5. Cleveland Browns - DE Brian Orakpo – Texas

It is still up in the air whether Braylon Edwards will get traded.  The Browns keep going back and forth with the New York Giants.  If Edwards does get traded then the Browns need to draft a WR and that should be Michael Crabtree.  As of now Edwards is still a Brown and there are a lot of needs on the defensive side of the ball so look for them to pick up a great pass rusher like Orakpo.

6. Cincinnati Bengals - OT Eugene Monroe – Virginia

The Bengals need to improve their offensive line and if Monroe falls to them this it should be a no brain pick.  Monroe is a top tier offensive tackle and will help RB Cedric Benson and QB Carson Palmer who is coming off shoulder surgery.

7. Oakland Raiders – WR Jeremy Maclin

Maclin is a big time playmaker which the Raiders really like and will help out JaMarcus Russell.  He only ran a 4.46 40-yard dash at the combine but with pads on he is a big time football player.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars - WR Michael Crabtree – Texas Tech

The Jaguars are looking to trade out of the 8th spot with someone who may want to move up and draft Mark Sanchez so don’t plan on Jacksonville staying here.  In the past week they have signed Torry Holt who is a great receiver but is getting older.  If Jacksonville stays at 8 and Crabtree is still available drafting him will turn last years weakness into the 2009 season’s strength.

9. Green Bay Packers – OT Andre Smith

The Packers need to upgrade their offensive line due to their tackles getting older.  Smith stock dropped after the combine but recently it has risen a bit and would be a good pick by Green Bay.

10. San Francisco 49ers - OT Michael Oher

The QB position is up in the air but whoever it is they need to be protected.  Oher has an amazing story and looks to be a good fit for the 49ers.  Scouts are a little weary of his work ethic but his talent outweighs any flaws that he may have.

Two big holes that the Bills need to fill are DE and OT.  If Michael Oher or Andre Smith falls to them at 11 then look for them to pick one of them up.  If neither are around they will be able to pick up a very good pass rusher.  Tyson Jackson’s stock has really risen in the past week and may even be pick in the top 10.

12. Denver Broncos – DT B.J. Raji – Boston College

Raji will probably not be drop this far and could be picked as high as 5th to the Cleveland Browns.  The Broncos have a glaring need on the defensive line.  It will be hard to pass on Raji who will be the best player on the board at this time.

13. Washington Redskins – DE Aaron Maybin – Penn State

Washington struggled to put pressure on the opposing QB last year and really hurt their defense.  Maybin may have the quickest first step among the defensive ends in this draft and will be a great addition to the Redskins defensive line.

14. New Orleans Saints – CB Malcolm Jenkins – Ohio State

New Orleans could take Beanie Wells here but they like Pierre Thomas so I don’t think that they will really need to take him.  Instead with the 14th pick they will look to fill a void in their defensive and that is safety or CB.  Jenkins can play safety or CB so this will be a great pick for the Saints.

15. Houston Texans – ILB Ray Mauagula – USC

The Texans have been getting better on offense every year as long as their QB Matt Schaub stays healthy.  Their defensive line has been stellar with their first overall pick a couple of years ago, Mario Williams.  They just added Antonio Smith from the Cardinals who will help on the other side of Williams.  Ray Mauagula will help add toughness in the middle of the defense.  He displays outstanding speed and size and can track down RB’s.

16. San Diego Chargers – RB Chris Wells – Ohio State

The Chargers may help their  defense by taking a LB but with L.T. getting old and injury prone now and not knowing if Darren Sproles can handle a full work load as the premier back.  Wells will really help fill the questions at that position for San Diego.

17. New York Jets – Darrius Heyward-Bey – Maryland

The Jets are one of the teams that are interested in Sanchez and may move up to draft him.  But losing Laveranues Coles to the Bengals opens up a gapping whole on offense. They will need another WR to go along side Jerricho Cotchery. Heyward-Bey is a speedy receiver which will be a great addition to their offense.

18. Denver Broncos (From Chicago) – DE Everette Brown – Florida State

The Broncos get this pick from Chicago in the Jay Cutler trade.  I think that the Broncos benefit from this trade because they have many holes that need to be filled on the defensive side of the ball.  Everette Brown will be a big help to defensive line by putting pressure on the opposing QB.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – ILB Brian Cushing – USC

Cushing is a very strong and physical linebacker and that is what the Bucs are looking for.  The released Derrick Brooks this off-season and Cushing will be a great replacement for the 2009 season.

20. Detroit Lions (From Dallas) – OT Eben Britton – Arizona

After passing on Jason Smith with the first overall pick and taking Matthew Stafford the Lions will have to get a offensive lineman to protect their new QB.  Britton should still be on the board with the 20th pick and will be the best tackle in on the big board.

Moreno is a big time playmaker and will be a great compliment to Brian Westbrook.  Moreno can run the ball as well as catch the ball out of the backfield.  He has proven to be a tough player at Georgia and will be able to stay healthy which Westbrook seems unable to do.

22. Minnesota Vikings – WR Hakeem Nicks – North Carolina

The Vikings need someone to complement Bernard Berrian.  Nicks is not a speedster but has very good hands.  He will be another playmaker for the Vikings offense.  Now they need to find a QB to throw to these talented wide receivers.

23. New England – OLB Clay Matthews – USC

New England got rid of Mike Vrabel in the Matt Cassel trade so they will be needing an inside presence.  Adding Matthews, along with rookie sensation Jerod Mayo will provide a tough defensive front for any NFL team.  Matthews is a very good athlete. He posses tremendous closing speed to track down QB’s and RB’s.

24. Atlanta Falcons – S Louis Delmas – Western Illinois

This may be a little high to pick up Delmas but with the addition of Tony Gonzalez they will no longer need to look at Oklahoma State’s Brandon Pettigrew.  They have a big need at Safety so drafting Delmas will help fill that void.

25. Miami Dolphins – CB Vontae Davis – Illinois

Vontae Davis is a tremendous athlete like his brother TE Vernon Davis of the 49ers.  Davis will need to continue to learn the game but should be a nice addition for the Dolphins defense.

26. Baltimore Ravens - WR Kenny Britt – Rutgers

The Ravens are looking to add weapons to the offensive to help Joe Flacco who was their 2008 first round draft pick.  Britt’s stock has risen lately and could possibley even be drafted higher than 26th to the Ravens.

27. Indianapolis Colts – DT Peria Jerry – Mississippi

The Colts have not been able to stop the run very well the past couple of years.  With two great speed rushers on the ends Jerry will help fill the gap in the middle that they have been missing.

28. Buffalo Bills (From Philadelphia via Carolina) – TE Brandon Pettigrew – Oklahoma State

Pettigrew would be a great pick up with the 28th pick.  This will add another weapon for QB Trent Edwards along with Terrell Owens. This will benefit Owens and Lee Evans as well because Pettigrew will help open up the middle and defenses won’t be able to focus solely on those two receivers.

29. New York Giants – WR Darrius Heyward-Bey – Maryland

I don’t know if Heyward-Bey is someone that the Giants are interested in if they can’t get a deal done with the Browns for Braylon Edwards but he is a speedy receiver that can make plays and catch passes from QB Eli Manning.

30. Tennessee Titans – ILB James Laurinaitis – Ohio State

The Titans could take a WR if there is one available that they are high on.  They could also look to improve on their defense which was one of the best last season.  Laurinaitis would be a great selection for the Titans and could help their defense for the 2009 season.

31. Arizona Cardinals – RB Donald Brown – Connecticut

Adding Brown will add another playmaker to the Cardinals offense.  In the later rounds they will have to address their offensive line as well as adding another pass rusher.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers – C Eric Wood – Louisville

The Steelers need to continue to improve their offensive line which was their weakness on last year’s Super Bowl winning team. Wood has a lot of size and strength and will be a great improvement for Pittsburgh’s front line.
