I know it’s been a while since my last piece, but I figured after the SEC title game on Saturday I knew I would have to write something. The need for me to write was brought on not just by Kirk Herbstreet and Lee Corso’s love for Florida QB Tim Tebow, but also by the country’s infatuation with the kid.

I’m not going to take anything away from the guy; he is a good COLLEGE quarterback. He knows to work the system in College in order to be successful. However, a person saying he’s simply good is not what’s bothering me. What really grinds my gears is how a lot of people are saying he’s amazing and the most talented athlete in College today. Well the people saying that can go choke on their own fists. It’s madness to make claims like that about a kid who basically runs an all option offense. Am I the only one that sees that? I heard a stat the other day that Tebow has taken less than 10 snaps from under center as a College QB, and then to top it off he’s only completed one of those passes. Hello! I’m pretty sure they don’t run the option in the NFL, and when they have this year for a little while it worked for about 3 weeks before teams put a stop to it.

And Florida Coach Urban Meyer….I’m extremely disappointed in you. You actually came out and said that you think Tebow is not only the best player in College that you’ve ever seen, but also the best player you’ve ever coached. What about the guy that was once your boy, but now you’ve seem to have forgotten about just like everyone else in the world because he has been terrible in the NFL? That’s right I’m talking about Utah’s 2004 QB Alex Smith. Did you forget about that guy Meyer? Do you forget how his 42 total touchdown’s with just 4 int’s not only led your average Utah team to a Mountain West title, but also a 12-0 record? Didn’t it also lead to him being taken 1st overall in the draft the next year too? A couple things come to mind when you consider all those things.

Tim Tebow will never ever ever be the 1st overall pick in the draft. He’s not talented enough at the position he plays to be able to compete in the NFL. We’ve all seen it before, and option quarterbacks for the most part do not succeed when lined up across from the best of the best.

I’m pretty sure Urban Meyer should learn to not diss his old players, mainly because if it weren’t for Alex Smith he most likely wouldn’t even be coaching at Florida right now. Yea sure he’s a good coach but Florida isn’t bringing a loser of a coach in. Smith helped him get that job by having that amazing season in ’04 and giving Meyer national recognition.

Utah!?! I know they’re great this year, but people forget they were also great in ’04. People will argue with me that Meyer was a great coach at Utah. I won’t deny that he was good, but with the season Smith had I think the player played a huge role in their success. The point here is that Smith was an excellent player on a team of average players. The guys around him were decent players but there weren’t any real standouts other than Smith. Smith had his great season with o.k. teammates on offense and defense. Utah won because Smith led them to a win every week. Tebow on the other hand has at least 4 guys on his team that will be playing in the NFL. Tebow is surrounding by enormous talent because of the recruits the school can bring in every year. I can’t respect Tebow as much knowing that he’s got a stacked lineup around him.

Meyer should get rid of his amnesia and remember what got him to where he is today, instead of praising the guy who’s helping Florida win this year. Utah is a good football school but when the team won big in ’04 with Meyer and Smith, it was much more of an accomplishment than winning lots of games with a Florida team that had a tradition of winning every year before you were even good enough to utter the name Gators. I’m sorry but I’m much more impressed with Smith + Meyer than I am with Tebow + Meyer.

I know I’m going to receive some opposition for this article but to be fair I know I’m right. Tebow will fade away after this year, because he’ll never be that successful in the NFL. He’s not good enough as a quarterback, and to be honest I don’t think he’s talented enough of an athlete to play a different position. Hopefully the people who vote for the Heisman do what’s right and don’t go with what all the experts are saying is a great choice. If Tebow wins the Heisman this year again I’ll be disgusted. Based on total T.D.’s and all that jazz I guess he deserved it last year, but no way he should get it this year. It needs to go to a Big 12 QB like Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, who deserves it for actually being a quarterback. Not just some player who can screw with defenses by faking a run and then throwing it deep; while defensive players in the secondary, who don’t have close to enough talent to even be on NFL practice squads, get beat because they bite on the run fake. It’s much more challenging when the defense knows you’re going to throw it and you still can throw 48 t.d.’s against some of the best teams in the country.

All this run/pass/run/run/fake run then pass/fake pass then run garbage is for pop warner, although it works in College. I’m getting out of control now so I’ll wrap it up even though I could go on forever about this topic. I’ll leave you guys with this to chew on. Tebow was talking the other day about how he’ll have his vote for the Heisman winner because he won last year. He discussed the possible candidates from the Big 12 and said they’re great and all but later on went to imply that he’s the best QB in College so he’ll vote for himself. He didn’t actually say it but everyone knew what he meant. Anyway, he then went on to say that he wishes he could have the chance to play against one of those Big 12 defenses. Basically he was implying that the only reason the Big 12 quarterbacks were any good this year, is because the defenses in the conference are awful.

Well to that I have to say you’re an idiot Tim Te“Blow”. I mean you can’t actually be serious. I know all the analyst’s say that the SEC is the best conference and all, but seriously take a look at the teams you had to play this year. The SEC is not that good, and you just tried to compare it the Big 12, which this year is possibly the best conference in College football history. I mean seriously Tim what amazing defenses have you played in the SEC? None. I’m not saying the Big 12 has great defenses, but don’t act like you’ve been playing the Steelers all year you mutt. Try to take a snap under center or just actually be a passing quarterback like the QB’s in the Big 12. When you can do that I’ll gain some respect for you. Until then keep your mouth shut because you’re a running fairy whose highlight of his life will be now in College because it’s all downhill from here on out for you bud.

Going off of an ESPN bit I saw on TV. Today, I want to honor Halloween by acknowledging some of the scariest sports moments I can remember. There are a few that come to mind very quickly and others that I had to think about, but all of them will haunt me forever. Here’s just a couple.

My first moment has to be when the Boston Red Sox came back from three games down in the ALCS to beat the Yankees. I’ll never forget how awful I felt after that and how much garbage I had to hear from the Boston faithful that surround me in my New England home. It was brutal to see happen and the fact that they will be remembered for the greatest comeback in history really ticks me off.

My second moment has to be the NFC Championship when the Green Bay Packers faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles. I am a die-hard Packers fan and when the Eagles had the 4th and 26 with very little time left in the game, I along with every other Green Bay fan thought the game was over. Well just to rain on our parade Donovan “I pull throws out of my a$$” McNabb completes a monster pass and the Eagles go on to win the game. It broke my heart because I really thought Favre was going to get another ring, but instead the lousy Eagles got destroyed in the super bowl.

A final moment that really spooks me is when Vince Young ran the ball to the right and scored a touchdown giving Texas the win over U.S.C. and giving the longhorns the national title. This haunting comes from the fact that I absolutely hated Texas that year and I really really hated Vince Young. I thought he was an overrated quarterback who wasn’t going to succeed in the NFL even though he was drawing comparisons to Michael Vick. I don’t really like USC that much either but I really don’t like Texas mainly because my favorite team is Missouri. That play was really awful too because anyone watching it knew Young was going to run the ball to the right and yet the Trojans still couldn’t stop him. The only positive that came out of Young scoring that T.D. was everyone boosting his value even more. Turns out my predictions about his inadequacies as an NFL quarterback were right and the fact that he’s the face of the franchise for the Titans yet he’s riding the pine makes me feel o.k. Years later. I do have to note though that I did think Leinart would be an o.k. NFL q.b. Not a great one but a good one. But it seems like that prediction has not panned out yet. We’ll see once he gets a full season under his belt.

Thanks for listening to my scary moments, I have more but I don’t have enough time to write them all down for you. If you have any moments that you want me to mention or just want me to know caused you extreme pain, email me at tanner5986@yahoo.com.

With the recent string of professional athletes getting into trouble with the law lately, I just have to say I’m getting pretty fed up. I mean seriously this is getting ridiculous. Between PacMan Jones, Larry Johnson, and now even Joba Chamberlain; I’m just about to lose my mind.

The fact that PacMan was let back into the NFL and still managed to screw up even with a league assigned security team, shows me that the man is an absolute worthless human being that does not deserve any sympathy. Deion Sanders should not be mentoring this guy, instead he should be pointing at him and telling his own kids to make sure they don’t grow up to be like him. If it were my decision he wouldn’t be allowed back in the NFL at all, but at least it seems that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is getting smart and keeping him away from “America’s” team for good. This guy was doing things that any normal person would have easily went to jail for, but he kept getting off with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. What an idiot he is for not being able to keep a low profile. He is in trouble this time for fighting with his own guard. C’mon man just walk away because you have to know if police get involved things are not going to good for you. I saw the HBO special “Hard Knocks” that covered the Dallas Cowboys training camp, and from watching that I actually got to see how stupid the guy sounds. He seemed insincere when talking about his past troubles with the law, and he constantly sounded like he was uninterested with whoever was talking to him. Not to mention he spoke like a very uneducated individual. His latest suspension doesn’t really surprise me because of this as I’m sure it didn’t surprise a lot of others.

Larry Johnson is also someone that I would consider a complete moron. Like Jones he makes millions of dollars and yet can’t seem to stay out trouble. He’s being accused of spitting a drink in a girls face. Now, I understand that the girl took 11 hours to report the incident, which sounds ridiculous, but she may have been hormonal so I can understand it. Even if Johnson didn’t do it and the girl is just looking to get her name in the papers, LJ should be smart enough to keep a low profile especially after he already got in trouble earlier in the year. I don’t know why guys like Johnson like the clubs they’re constantly getting into trouble in anyway. If it were me I would be in a local small time bar listening to some Pearl Jam and playing darts and pool with some buddies to wind down, not sitting on a couch in a packed club with music blasting so loud you can’t hear the person next to you talking.

Even Joba is getting in on the fun by getting arrested in Nebraska for a DUI. I understand he’s young and having a good time, but come on man all you have to do is spend like $500 of the millions you make and hire a driver for the night. It’s not that hard and it keeps you from getting smeared in the press like your getting. I feel bad for him in a way because everyone I know excluding a few people drive when they’ve had a few drinks. It sucks that he had to be caught for it, but he should be smarter than that anyway.

Honestly, the moral of the story for these guys and the hundreds of other professional athletes who get in trouble with the law each year, is to get smart and stop being so dumb. A lot of us wish we had the talent that most of them do, and you can bet we wouldn’t waste our chances by acting like idiots like some of them do. They just have to use some of the common sense they had before they were multi millionaires, and use caution when entering a situation that is questionable.
