2012 NFL Mock Draft

1. Indianapolis Colts – QB Andrew Luck – Stanford

He will no longer have Pierre Garcon or Reggie Wayne so later in the draft they will have to look for a wide receiver. But he is a sure fire pick and will be their franchise QB for 15 years.

2. Washington Redskins (From St. Louis) – Robert Griffin – Baylor

We now know who will be drafting Robert Griffin III with Washington trading three draft picks. They also signed Pierre Garcon as a weapon for their new franchise quarterback.

3. Minnesota Vikings – CB Morris Claiborne – LSU

Minnesota has many options with the 3rd overall pick. They ultimately want to trade out of the position but if there are no takers then I believe they should go with Claiborn. In a division where they play Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, and Jay Cutler a total of 6 times they will need to sure up the secondary.

4. Cleveland Browns – RB Trent Richardson – Alabama

Behind the two top QB’s, I believe Richardson is the best prospect and may be the best football player in the 2012 NFL draft. The Browns have to start putting players around the quarterback position whether that is Colt McCoy or someone else that they may draft this year.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - ILB Luke Kuechly – Boston College

Kuechley is a tough and physical linebacker who has risen up the draft boards. Tampa Bay could go in many different directions here as well. I think putting a playmaking defender in the middle of the defense for many years will be the best option

6. St. Louis Rams – WR Justin Blackman – Oklahoma State

Blackmon is the best wide receiver in this draft class. He has great hands and tremendous body control. Adding him with Sam Bradford and Steven Jackson will make the offense a lot more dynamic.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars - DT Fletcher Cox – Mississippi State

Fletcher Cox has been rising up the draft boards in the past week. Jacksonville could take Michael Floyd to help out Blaine Gabbert who they drafted in the first round last year. Either pick I think will benefit them but Cox is the best available player at this position so they will go with him.

8. Miami Dolphins – QB Ryan Tannehill – Texas A& M

This is a perfect fit for the Dolphins. They have their quarterback of the future and he won’t have to play right away. Matt Moore performed very well last year and will give Tannehill the year to learn and mature so he will be ready for the 2013 NFL season.

9. Carolina Panthers - OT Matt Kalil – USC

If Matt Kalil falls down this far the Panthers will be quick to pick him. This will sure up their offensive line for Cam Newton and their running game. If Kalil isn’t taken here the Bills will be sure to pick him up so he will not fall out of the top 10 picks.

10. Buffalo Bills - S Mark Barron – Alabama

Barron is one of the best defensive football players in this draft. It looked like for a while that he would be heading to Dallas but teams have been saying he wont make it out of the top ten. Bills are in a perfect position to take him, Michael Floyd, or Stephen Gilmore.

2012 NFL Mock Draft by Richie

1. Indianapolis Colt – QB Andrew Luck – Stanford

With Peyton Manning out, it is clear the Colts are ready to move forward with a new QB. Griffin is no doubt a top QB prospect and more electrifying than Luck, but I don’t see how you pass up Luck. Even if he doesn’t live up to the ridiculous hype surrounding him, he should still be a very solid QB in the NFL.

2. Washington Redskins (from St. Louis) – QB Robert Griffin III – Baylor

Well, I was right in my previous mock draft in predicting the Redskins would trade up to draft Griffin, I was just one draft slot off. By officially trading up to the 2nd spot here, they have determined RG3 is worth all the picks they gave up for him and can be a franchise QB for years to come.

3. Minnesota Vikings – OT Matt Kalil – USC

Minnesota believes that Christian Ponder is their quarterback, and they know in order to provide him with the best opportunity to succeed, he needs a good offensive line. Kalil is by far the best offensive lineman in this draft, and could even be one of the best to come out in the last few years.

4. Cleveland Browns – RB Trent Richardson – Alabama

They missed out on Griffin, so now they’ll have to turn elsewhere to find offensive help. Peyton Hillis is gone to the Kansas City, so a new running back would help the offense tremendously, especially a guy like Richardson. Richardson is a complete all-around back and would be a great value and positional pick here.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – CB Morris Claiborne – LSU

They could use an offensive tackle, but after a very disappointing season, I think they need to start by improving on the 30th ranked defense. They have the offensive pieces in place, so why not improve the defense with the best corner in the draft. Even with the signing of corner Eric Wright, they could still use another corner to play on the other side of him.

6. St. Louis Rams (from Washington) – WR Justin Blackmon – Oklahoma State

By trading down, the Rams now have more picks and should be able to improve their team even more than if they stayed at number 2. Here, a wide receiver would make sense as they lost Lloyd to free agency, and Blackmon is just a beast for a WR.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars – DE Quinton Coples – North Carolina

Offense was the primary concern for Jacksonville heading into the draft, but signing WR Laurent Robinson takes reaching for a WR off the board here. Trading down is definitely a possibility, as they could get a WR later in the first round if they want. For now, I have them improving their pass rush with Coples.

8. Miami Dolphins – OT Riley Reiff – Iowa

QB Ryan Tannehill is in play here for Miami, but I believe they will end up signing Matt Flynn in free agency. If that is the case, a tackle would be the right pick here to sure up the O-line.

Fantasy Running Backs

Written by Richie Graffeo

1. Arian Foster – Texans

2. Adrian Peterson – Vikings

3. Jamaal Charles – Chiefs

4. Ray Rice – Ravens

5. Rashard Mendenhall – Steelers

6. Maurice Jones-Drew – Jaguars

7. LeSean McCoy – Eagles

8. Michael Turner – Falcons

9. Chris Johnson – Titans

10. Darren McFadden – Raiders

Notes on the Top 10:

As you can see, Arian Foster edged out Peterson for the number 1 spot in my rankings. Foster had a ridiculous year last season, and the only question is whether he can come close to those numbers again, and I think yes. He’s only 25 years old and is a powerful runner, so he should be able to take a beating for at least a few more years to come, giving him a real bright future. Jamaal Charles takes the number 3 slot, as I see no reason he shouldn’t have another great year. He’s super-fast, and despite his great season, he only had 8 total touchdowns. The aging Thomas Jones stole 6 from him last year, but I expect Charles to rack up a few more this season with Jones getting less touches. I’m also a fan of LeSean McCoy, who I expect to repeat his performance last year with an even better one. With teams focusing more on blitzing Vick, look for more of those short passes to McCoy to get him into the open field. Final note on the top 10 is addressing Chris Johnson coming in at number 9. Just because he didn’t live up to expectations last season doesn’t mean he didn’t have a good year, just not number 1 overall pick status. The two main things that concern me with him is this whole holding out and contract situation, and also that Tennessee is not a very good team.

11. Steven Jackson – Rams

12. Matt Forte – Bears

13. Peyton Hillis – Browns

14. Frank Gore

15. LeGarrette Blount – Buccaneers

16. Ahmad Bradshaw – Giants

17. Felix Jones – Cowboys

18. Knowshon Moreno – Broncos

19. Ryan Grant – Packers

20. Benjarvus Green-Ellis – Patrios

Notes on 11 – 20:

Steven Jackson at number 11 may be a bit high for some people, but I still think he’s a very useful RB. Last season he played in every game and had double-digit fantasy points at least 11 times. He only had 6 touchdowns, but I expect to see a slight rise in that number with the continued growth of Sam Bradford and just the Rams offense in general. Frank Gore and Ryan Grant are the main injury risks in this group, but if Gore can stay healthy (which I doubt), then he could easily be a top 6 running back. I’m a believer in Tampa Bay’s offense, which is why Blount is so high. Same with Felix Jones in Dallas, as I think with Barber gone he’ll see more carries in a high powered offense led by Tony Romo. Forte and Moreno especially are on pretty weak teams, so that’s a bit of a concern for me, but they’re both solid RBs.

21. Beanie Wells – Cardinals

22. Jahvid Best – Lions

23. Shonn Green – Jets

24. DeAngelo Williams – Panthers

25. Cedric Benson – Bengals

26. Mark Ingram – Saints

27. Ryan Mathews – Chargers

28. Marshawn Lynch – Seahawks

29. Tim Hightower – Redskins

30. Mike Tolbert – Chargers

Notes on 21 – 30:

You might be thinking, DeAngelo Williams at number 24?? Actually that might even be a little high. Not only is he one of the biggest injury risks among all players, but he’s also on one of the worst teams in the league. With not much of an offensive line or stability at the quarterback position in Carolina, Williams averaged only 7 fantasy points per game in the 6 games that he actually played in. So not only does he have to stay healthy, but you have to hope for a huge bounce-back season which I think is too much to ask. Wells, Best, and even Greene have the opportunity to produce and have a top 10 RB season. If these guys can stay healthy, expect very nice years out of all of them, and are high risk/high reward kind of guys. Lastly I’ll mention the two guys out of San Diego, Tolbert and Mathews. Last year, Tolbert got 11 touchdowns and had just less than 1000 total yards, while Mathews was just over 800 total yards and 7 TDs in an injury filled season. I’m expecting Mathews to get more touches this season because the Chargers drafted him in the 1st round for a reason and want to give him every chance to produce, which is why I have him slightly ahead of Tolbert.

31. Fred Jackson – Bills

32. Joseph Addai – Colts

33. Reggie Bush – Dolphins

34. Jonathan Stewart – Panthers

35. Michael Bush – Raiders

36. Brandon Jacobs – Giants

37. Pierre Thomas – Saints

38. Daniel Thomas – Dolphins

39. Willis McGahee – Broncos

40. Ryan Torain – Redskins

41. James Starks – Packers

42. Jerome Harrison – Lions

43. Rashard Jennings – Jaguars

44. C.J. Spiller – Bills

45. Montario Hardesty – Browns

46. Ben Tate – Texans

47. Danny Woodhead – Patriots

48. Ronnie Brown – Eagles

49. Jason Snelling – Falcons

50. Delone Carter – Colts

Notes on 31 – 50:

Fred Jackson is by far the best in this group, it’s just the Bills are so bad he will only be able to do so much this season. CJ Spiller looks worse and worse every day, so don’t expect him to do much, as he might just be the next Aaron Maybin. In Jonathan’s Stewart’s case, basically everything I said about DeAngelo Williams, but add in the fact he’s the backup to start week 1. A lot of these RBs this late are backups, and you should draft them based on playing potential. For example, Darren McFadden is an injury risk, so if he goes down at some point in the season, Michael Bush would then become the starter and have a starring role. Same goes for James Starks in Green Bay or Ben Tate in Houston. That being said, if you drafted let’s just say a Ryan Grant, you’re going to want Starks in case Grant gets injured.

1. Carolina Panthers – QB Cam Newton – Auburn

Cam Newton is a phenomenal athlete and a physical specimen. I don’t believe that he is the best quarterback in the 2011 NFL draft, that title going to Blaine Gabbert of Missouri, but it seems that if the Panthers do go with QB at #1 then they will go with Newton. Newton has demonstrated that he can play QB in the NFL during the season at Auburn as well as during his pro day so it won’t be a terrible pick.

2. Denver Broncos - DT/DE Marcell Dareus – Alabama

If Marcell Dareus does not go to the Panthers with the 1st overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Broncos won’t take too long to scoop him up. He will fit new Head Coach John Fox’s 4-3 defensive scheme perfectly as he may be the best football player in the 2011 NFL draft.

3. Buffalo Bills – OLB Von Miller – Texas A&M

The Bills will have to think strongly about drafting Blaine Gabbert with the third overall pick. I think that Von Miller is a playmaking defensive player that can play the linebacker position or rush the passer. He has been compared to DeMarcus Ware and posses many of the same skills. The Bills will still be in the running for Andrew Luck in the 2012 NFL draft.

4. Cincinnati Bengals - WR A.J. Green – Georgia

Carson Palmer seems to be set on retiring because I don’t see the Bengals trading him when the lockout comes to an end and trading opens up. I would think that with Blaine Gabbert still on the draft board that they should go with him as a backup plan but I don’t hear any interest coming from Cincinnati’s draft camp that they will go in that direction.

5. Arizona Cardinals – QB Blaine Gabbert – Missouri

The Cardinals’ QB situation currently is a mess and they should definitely be looking for their franchise QB in the 2011 NFL mock draft. With this pick they could choose between Cam Newton, Ryan Mallet, or Blaine Gabbert. I think that Blaine Gabbert is the number one quarterback coming into the 2011 NFL mock draft.

6. Cleveland Browns - WR Julio Jones – Alabama

The Browns could go with a defensive end here like a Robert Quinn but I think with Colt McCoy becoming their franchise quarterback he will need a big time playmaker to throw to. Julio Jones is a big body with great hands and speed. I wouldn’t blame them if they went to the defensive side of the ball but it will be hard to pass on Jones here.

7. San Francisco 49ers – CB Patrick Peterson – LSU

With this pick in the 2011 NFL mock draft, the 49ers could look to draft a QB. With Gabbert and Newton off the board, San Francisco should look to draft the best available player on their big board. That just happens to be Patrick Peterson who is a dynamic athlete with very good cover corner skills.

8. Tennessee Titans - DT Nick Fairley – Auburn

The Titans could go in a few directions here. They are going to release QB Vince Young and can’t continue with Kerry Collins. I don’t think any QB is worthy with this pick though so I think they turn to the defensive side of the ball. This would be a great pick up if Fairley falls to them at pick number eight in the 2011 NFL mock draft.

9. Dallas Cowboys – OT Tyron Smith – USC

The Cowboys have a few different needs and could go in a few directions. They could draft a defensive end here because they have some defensive lineman who are free agents. I believe that they need to start on the offensive line though especially since Tony Romo is coming off a injury that held him out of most of last season.

10. Washington Redskins – DE J.J. Watt – Wisconsin

With the 10th pick in the 2011 NFL mock draft they could go a few ways. They could go with a quarterback but my top two QB’s are off the board so I would move to the next position which is a playmaking WR. The Redskins drafted a great DE in Brian Orakpo two years ago so now if they go with another defensive end that pass rush will be hard to defend and will help improve their all around defense.

21. Kansas City Chiefs – DE Muhammad Wilkerson – Temple

Tamba Hali had a great season rushing the passer. Adding another pass rusher like Muhammad Wilkerson on the other side could really improve a pretty good defensive next year.

22. Indianapolis Colts – DT Drake Nevis – LSU

The Colts got dumped in the first round of the playoffs for the first time in awhile. One glaring weakness that the Jets took advantage of was the Colts run defense. They have had a great pass rush year in and year out but they have been known to struggle in the run defense. Despite Nevis’ lack of size he is very good against the run. They have been in desperate need of an anchor in the middle of the defensive line and Drake Nevis should provide that.

23. Philadelphia Eagles - OT Anthony Castonzo – Boston College

The Eagles have given up a lot of sacks this season even with the mobile QB Michael Vick. Anthony Castonzo has prototypical height and has very good mobility but needs to add bulk.

24. New Orleans Saints – DE Cameron Heyward – Ohio State

Cameron Heyward could have been a high draft pick last year but decided to stay one more year in college. He has had a great senior season. He has very good size and is a versatile player who can rush the passer or drop back in coverage. The defense has really struggled this year giving up some big plays and creating less turnovers.

25. Seattle Seahawks - DE Adrian Clayborn – Iowa

Seattle won their division even with a losing record and even with a lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball. Adding Clayborn will dramatically improve their pass rush especially since they will have to battle Sam Bradford for years to come. They could also use a quarterback for next season.

26. Baltimore Ravens – WR Randall Cobb – Kentucky

Last year, the Ravens had many talented WR’s but they were all possession receivers. They need some speed which they tried out with Donte Stallworth but he is getting old and just isn’t as talented as a Cobb. Along with his speed he is also a great route runner who could help out in the return game as well.

27. Atlanta Falcons – DE Aldon Smith – Missouri

Atlanta has had a very good season this year in many different areas. One weakness that I have noticed is their lack of pressure from their four down lineman on defense. They finished the 2010 regular season tied for 20th in sacks. Last year they drafted Sean Witherspoon from Missouri and now its time to add another Missouri player to their front line.

28. New England Patriots – G Dan Watkins – Baylor

Dan Watkins played tackle at Baylor, but at the NFL level he will be a very good guard. New England’s offensive line has been getting older and also has had some injury problems. They added their defensive end with their first pick and now they will address the offensive line with their second 1st round pick.

29. Chicago Bears – OT Greg Carimi – Wisconsin

Jay Cutler was sacked more times than anyone this year in the NFL and needs to be protected next season if they have any chance at making it to the Super Bowl. Carimi is a top offensive lineman who will be hard to pass up come the Bears’ pick.

30. New York Jets – OT Derek Sherrod – Mississippi St

The Jets are a very good team that are in serious contention for the Super Bowl. With not many weaknesses they will be looking to add depth and one place that they could use some depth is the offensive line. He may not play right away but any time there could be an injury and he would be a great replacement.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers - C Mike Pouncey – Florida

In the 2011 NFL draft look for the Steelers to continue to upgrade their offensive line. Mike Pouncey has been playing center this year at Florida but when his brother was there last year he played guard. With the Steelers he will reunite with his brother and move back to guard which will help protect Ben Roethlisberger.

32. Green Bay Packers – OLB Justin Houston – Georgia

The Packers had a great season resulting in a Super Bowl victory. They have many players coming back from IR for the 2011 season. Adding Justin Houston will add more weapons to that defense that was so disruptive during the 2010 season. He has top pass rushing skills to go along a huge frame that will give defensive coordinator Dom Capers plenty of options.

Looking for a great way to become involved in the NFL frenzy this fall? Participating in a Survivor Elimination Pool may be just the right answer. While many NFL-related games such as fantasy football require extensive knowledge, time, and commitment, Survivor Elimination Pools offer a simple, exciting way for everyone to share in the fun of football season. How do Survivor Elimination Pools work? It’s easy!

All you have to do is pick one team each week to win. If the team you pick loses, you are eliminated from the Survivor Elimination Pool. If the team you pick wins and you survive, you select a new team to win for the next week. Sounds easy, right? It is. The catch is that you can only select a particular team to win once. The winner(s) of the Survivor Elimination Pool is the “survivor” who outlasts all other participants.

Survivor Elimination Pools are an excellent way to enjoy football season with family, friends, and coworkers alike. Need some inside information to help you win your Survivor Elimination Pool? No problem. Each week our panel of football experts participates in a mock Survivor Elimination Pool by selecting a team and providing a brief explanation as to why they believe that particular team will win. Feel free to use their expertise to help you win your Survivor Elimination Pool or to tell them why your choice is better…

In addition, due to the Thursday night matchup, the Texans defense will have even less time to prepare for the unique considerations that need to be accounted for when playing against Michael Vick. The Houston Texans have never defeated the Philadelphia Eagles and the chances that the Texans will get their first victory Thursday night in Philadelphia are very slim.

They are coming off their second divisional loss of the season. This could be a very risky pick due too Kansas City being undefeated and coming off a bye week. The Chiefs have had two weeks to prepare and look to be a young and upcoming team in the NFL. I have faith in Peyton Manning that he will step up and lead the Colts to victory so I am going with them in my survivor pool for week 5.

Although the Bengals offense has failed to live up to expectations thus far, they are still a far more explosive team than their Week #5 opponent, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs struggle to put points up on the scoreboard and will continue to do against the Bengals defense in Cincinnati. Look for the Bengals to move a game above .500 with a win at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week #5.

Hopefully with RB Ryan Mathews back in the lineup San Diego will be more balanced on offense and get back to their winning ways at home.

Keeping opposing teams off the field is one of the best ways to stop them from scoring points and the Falcons have been great at it thus far in 2010. Combine that fact with momentum from beating the defending Super Bowl Champs on their own turf and the Falcons are looking quite favorable playing at home against an inconsistent 49ers team.

Take the team who is going against the Bills. Yes the Bills are bad but actually that is only a small part of why I’m picking the Patriots this week. After being dominated for most of the game last week against the Jets, New England is going to come out throwing all over that Buffalo secondary until they score 40 or 50 points and knowing Bill Belichick that still may not be enough. This weeks’ survivor pick should be safe in the hands of the New England Patriots.

Now that the Dallas Cowboys sabotaged my chance to win this year’s Survivor Elimination Pool, why not roll the dice from week to week with a few risky picks? Enter San Diego Chargers. The Chargers will be facing the Seattle Seahawks in Week #3 without running back Ryan Matthews at 100%. We also witnessed in Week #1 how hostile environments can rattle Philip Rivers and Qwest Field is no easy place for visiting teams to win. This game is certainly closer than the 5.5 spread indicates but nevertheless I select the San Diego Chargers to win.

The Fantasy Guy

Minnesota at New Orleans

New Orleans

The first game that kicks off the 2010 NFL season is a rematch of the NFC Championship game last year. I can’t think of a better way to start off the 2010 NFL Eliminator pool by picking the first game. When taking a look at week 1 there are no easy picks here. If you take a look at the teams that are projected to be in the bottom of the league (which is a popular strategy) there still are no easy games to pick. The four teams that I have projected in the bottom of the NFL this year are Buffalo, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Detroit. Buffalo plays at home against rival Miami which is always a tight battle no matter the records of each team. St. Louis plays at home against Arizona who currently doesn’t have a legit quarterback. Tampa Bay plays at home against Cleveland who is another team towards the bottom of the league. And Detroit plays at Chicago who I believe won’t be that strong this year. Well that strategy is out the window, so guess I have to go with my next strategy and that is take the Thursday night game so it is out of the way and you can either celebrate the victory or drown your sorrows in the weekend.
New Orleans got the best of Minnesota last year and eventually going on to be Super Bowl champs. This year in the rematch I don’t expect the game to be as close as it was in January. Brett Favre is back but lost his big play receiver in Sidney Rice. They will also have to contend with the crowd noise because I expect the Superdome to be crazy on Thursday. New Orleans will start their 2010 season with a win but look for this matchup again in this year’s playoffs.
Expect Chris Johnson to live up to his #1 fantasy ranking as the Tennessee Titans run over the Oakland Raiders in week 1.
